Castle History

The beautiful Alpha Xi Delta house, better known as “the Castle” to those who call it home, is constantly renovated so it is kept in satisfactory shape for its residents and other members.

The original Alpha Xi house was off campus at 1527 M St, but in 1920, the girls, the alumnae, and the Mother’s Club began raising money with the dream of a chapter house on campus. This dream became reality in 1929 when the members were able to move into our familiar location at 1619 R Street before recruitment that year.

From then on, our Corporation Board has completed countless projects each year to improve the functioning and presence of our home. The Corporation Board is a group of alumnae who are constantly providing fiscal guidance and is to thank for all of the wonderful housing projects that have been completed over the years. A new edition was completed in 1968, which created room for 20 more girls to live in addition to a new dining room, kitchen, and a larger living area for our house mom. The decision for this project was made due to the increasing number of students coming to UNL. The big project for the summer of 2008 was installing a sprinkler system to the entire area of the house as the University requires that all campus living units have sprinkler systems installed by 2018.

Rho chapters Centennial was in 2012, and the signature project was for the renovation of the fourth floor. To keep up with the increase in girls deciding to join the Greek community, the floor has undergone construction to allow more girls to live in the house. The space is more like an apartment for six girls with a sleeping area, a study area and its own bathroom. This project has been dubbed by some as “Lulu’s attic” in honor of our great founder who we hope would be proud to see how far our house has come since its construction in 1929.
